💡 New study highlights promising treatment for Salivary Gland Cancer

Therapies targeting HER2—a protein found on the cell surface—are showing promise as an effective option for treating some Salivary Gland Cancers.

While most studies on HER2 focus on breast cancers, it impacts the development of other cancers, including SGC. It is reported to play a role in up to 13% of adenocarcinomas, not otherwise specified (NOS) and 43% of salivary duct carcinomas.

Clinical trials have shown that HER2-directed therapies can be effective in treating SGC but currently, they are not approved for routine use in the UK.

Brand new research from the The Christie NHS Foundation Trust describes real-world use of these therapies, adding to the evidence informing routine use and potentially expanding the treatment options available for patients.

about 5 days ago The mandible is your lower jaw – the largest and strongest bone in the skull. It shapes the lower jaw line, and the structure of the bottom third of your face, as well as holding your bottom set of teeth in place. • The main body of the mandible is curved like a horseshoe and contains the teeth • There are two mandibular rami, which rise perpendicular from the body on either side of the head • Each ramus links with the temporal bone to form the temporomandibular joint, which allows the jaw to open and close for eating and speaking • The mandible is also the attachment point for a range of powerful muscles used in eating and chewing Sometimes, to ensure the complete removal of a salivary gland cancer tumour, it is necessary to excise some bone from the mandible. This tends to be more common during operations to remove the submandibular or sublingual glands, which are closest to the lower jaw. Salivary Gland Cancer UK (SGC UK) is pleased to announce a conference/workshop travel grant, offering up to £500 to support those who do not otherwise receive funding to attend such events e.g. medical undergraduates, allied healthcare professionals and patient advocates

To be eligible for consideration for funding from SGC UK, the proposed conference/workshop that you are requesting the travel grant for must clearly have a salivary gland cancer focus, or component or be of direct relevance to salivary gland cancers.

Your attendance should improve our understanding of salivary gland cancer, its treatments, or the experience of those living with it.

This includes developing our knowledge of the basic biology of these cancers, as well as their diagnosis and treatment, and living with and beyond salivary gland cancers.

As a charity, we have developed our 8 core aims using patient-clinician co-production.

Your travel should support one or more of these aims and we ask in your application that you demonstrate the links to these aim/s, where applicable.

Basal Cell Adenocarcinoma (BCAC) is a rare salivary gland cancer that accounts for 1–3% of salivary gland cancers.

BCAC mostly affects people over 50 years of age, with little difference in the number of men and women affected.

Most BCAC forms in the parotid gland (just below and in front of each ear), although there have been some cases of BCAC in the submandibular gland (below the jaws).

BCAC forms a slow-growing painless lump, which usually spreads into surrounding nerves and blood vessels.

Common symptoms include swelling, pain or tenderness, and numbness in the face.

We had an incredible time at this year’s Swallows Conference, surrounded by inspiring individuals, vital conversations, and the shared drive to make a difference for those affected by salivary gland cancer. Barry, as always, was hard at work, keeping everything running smoothly (thank you, Barry! 🙌), while Emma was busy networking, catching up with old friends, and meeting new faces. There’s truly nothing like connecting with this wonderful community.
